The HP 4X DDR IB Mezzanine HCA for HP BladeSystem c-Class is a single-port 4X DDR InfiniBand PCI-Express Mezzanine adapter
for HP c-Class server blades. It uses the latest double data rate InfiniBand technology that runs at 20Gbps (gigabits per second)
signaling rate in each direction (40Gbps full duplex). The HP 4X DDR IB Mezzanine HCA uses memory free technology that has
lower power consumption and lower cost. The HP 4X DDR IB Mezzanine HCA can be plugged into PCI-Express connectors on HP c-
Class server blades; however, to obtain the best performance, it is required to plug the IB Mezzanine HCA into the x8 PCI-Express
connector on the blade servers. The IB Mezzanine HCA is connected to the HP IB switch module in the c-Class switch bay via the c-
Class midplane. Multiple HCAs can be plugged into available PCI-Express mezzanine connectors per blade server and be connected
to switch modules in the switch bays. A subnet manager is required to manage and control an InfiniBand fabric. The subnet manager
functionality can be provided by either a rack-mount switch with embedded subnet manager or a host-based subnet manager
software running on a server in the fabric.
The HP 4X DDR IB Mezzanine HCA can be configured by ordering one of the following three options, and the only difference is the
InfiniBand host software (driver and user level protocols):
The HP HPC 4X DDR IB Mezz HCA comes with the Voltaire GridStack software. Voltaire GridStack is a comprehensive set of drivers
and user level protocols (ULPs) that enable applications to utilize the RDMA features in the hardware. GridStack allows both HPC
and enterprise applications to run significantly faster leveraging bandwidth and latency benefits of DDR InfiniBand. The TCP/IP
emulation software incorporated into GridStack makes InfiniBand appear to the user as a standard IP network with IP addressing,
TCP/IP protocols, and IP management for easy deployment and maintenance. Supported protocols include MPI, IPoIB and iSER. HP
provides full support for Voltaire GridStack when the HP HPC 4X DDR IB HCA is ordered. The Voltaire GridStack is supported on
Linux and Microsoft Windows Compute Cluster Server 2003 (CCS).
The HP Cisco 4X DDR IB Mezz HCA comes with the Cisco InfiniBand drivers. The benefits include performance optimization, high
availability, driver security, gateway translation, management and troubleshooting. Cisco drivers are one of the software options HP
bundles and supports with BladeSystem c-Class mezzanine HCAs. This bundle includes licenses to use the Linux Open Fabrics
Enterprise Distribution (OFED) and Cisco commercial driver packages for Linux. Supported protocols on Linux includes IPoIB, MPI,
SRP, SDP, and uDAPL.
The HP 4X DDR IB Mezz HCA comes with the HCA hardware and the associated documentation. There is no software included. This
HCA should be ordered only if the customer wants to use open source software. The HP Mezz HCA has been tested with OFED
(OpenFabrics Enterprise Distribution) version 1.1.
HP-MPI is supported on the Voltaire GridStack and Cisco IB drivers. HP-MPI is a high performance and production quality
implementation of the Message-Passing Interface (MPI) standard for HP servers and workstations. HP-MPI uses enhancements
whenever appropriate to provide low latency and high bandwidth point-to-point and collective communication routines. It supports
multi-protocol execution of MPI applications on clusters of shared-memory servers so that applications can take advantage of the
shared memory for intra-node communications.
The HP 4X DDR IB Switch Module for HP BladeSystem c-Class is a double wide switch module for the c-Class enclosure. It is based
on the Mellanox 24-port InfiniScale III 4X DDR InfiniBand switch chip. The HP 4X DDR IB Switch Module for HP BladeSystem c-Class
provides 24 InfiniBand 4X DDR ports with 20 Gbps port-to-port connectivity. The ports are arranged as 16 downlinks to connect up
to 16 blade servers in the enclosure, and 8 uplinks to connect to the external InfiniBand switches to build an InfiniBand fabric. All
links conform to InfiniBand Trade Association (IBTA) specifications. A subnet manager is required to manage and control an
InfiniBand fabric. The subnet manager can be provided by either on a rack-mount InfiniBand switch with an embedded fabric
manager (also known as internally managed switch) or a host-based subnet manager software on a server. For HPC configurations,
we support using Voltaire Grid Switch family products with embedded fabric manager and Cisco SFS 7000D 24-port DDR/SDR
switch to provide the subnet management service.
Voltaire Grid Switch family products come with the GridVision™ fabric and device manager software stack running on an embedded
processor on the internally managed switch. The GridVision provides comprehensive and powerful management capabilities,
delivering real-time proactive management by providing: Aggregated fabric and resource views, access to a suite of fabric and
switch diagnostics, the ability to manage fail-over on all levels, and provisioning of InfiniBand fabrics and the attached server,
