NM-1FE-TX Network Processor Module
Overview
In an effort to drive adoption of Fast Ethernet technology across
its product line, a Fast Ethernet network module (NM-1FE-TX)
for the Cisco 3600 series routers (Cisco 3620, Cisco 3640) is now
being made available. The NM-1FE-TX module (see Figure 2) is
ideal for a wide range of local-area applications and supports
many features and standards designed for internetworking in
general. The single-port network module can support 10 or 100
Mbps, and the speed is autosensed. The following examples
describe typical customer applications for using the
NM-1FE-TX module.
NM-1FE-TX Applications/Benefits
VLAN Routing
Virtual LAN (VLAN) support on the NM-1FE-TX module
enables network managers to group users logically rather than by
physical location, easing adds, moves, and changes. VLAN traffic
can be transported using Cisco’s ISL protocol for communication
with the Catalyst 5000, 5500, and 3000 switches. Routing is
possible between VLANs in Cisco switches such as the Catalyst
5000, 5500, Catalyst 3000 series, and the Catalyst 1900 and 2820
series switches. Support for the upcoming industry standard
802.1Q will be available when the standard is finalized.
The high performance of the underlying Cisco 3600
combined with the feature-rich NM-1FE-TX module makes it an
ideal combination for a low-density, higher-performance
application such as inter-VLAN routing. (See Figure 2.) This
application is often referred to as a “router-on-a-stick”
application.
High-Speed Interconnect
The NM-1FE-TX module enables network managers to
implement their Fast Ethernet routing solutions for optimal cost
and performance across a wide range of applications, including
campus/enterprise backbones and data centers. It is also a
low-cost way for Fast Ethernet access to traditional low-speed
WAN services.
Local-Area Network Aggregation
The Cisco 3600 router can support as many as eight Ethernet and
three Ethernet/three Token Ring platforms connected to a Fast
Ethernet network. High-density serial (up to 12 T1/E1, 24
low-speed synch, or 96 low-speed asynch serial) and ISDN (6
PRI, 24 BRI) interfaces are also supported.
Finally, in conjunction with the Catalyst 3000 or 5000/5500
system, the Fast Ethernet processor can be used to aggregate up to
eight 10-Mbps LANs and give them high-speed access to such
Layer 3 routing services as firewalling and access lists.
